Industrial Design Philosophy - Craig Philip Bainton - Freelance Industrial, Product, Automotive, Website and Graphic Designer.

The 4 years I spent at Coventry University led me to approach design with a 'form-from-function' philosophy - I approach the function first. Take wheelchairs. My starting point would be to say, 'How can I reduce the size of a wheelchair and improve its manoeuvrability so that it improves the lifestyle of the user?', not by saying, 'How can I make a wheelchair look really cool?', forgetting all about what the user really needs.

This philosophy is where truly new ideas are born. Real ideas. Exciting ideas. Ideas which work. Ideas that matter. Ideas which solve problems. The fantastic thing is that working in this manner invariably results in something which is far more visually exciting - because it is different. And because the function has been there all along, the design is firmly rooted in reality, allowing transitions to manufacture not only viable, but possible, all without ever compromising the design.
